Sercan Akil is a PhD student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa, and a member of the Derin Precipitation Lab at IIHR Hydroscience & Engineering. Before coming to Iowa, he worked as a hydrometeorologist at the Turkish State Meteorological Service focusing on radar and satellite-based quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE), flash flood early warning, and hydrologic analysis. He served as a trainer for the Flash Flood Guidance System (FFGS) with the Hydrologic Research Center (WMO supported program) and was a visiting researcher at the Finnish Meteorological Institute where he focused on operational applications of EUTMETSAT H-SAF precipitation and soil moisture products. He holds an MSc in Hydrology and Water Engineering from Brunel University London and BSc in Civil Engineering from Dokuz Eylul University. His PhD research, part of NASA funded project on satellite precipitation uncertainty, examines how IMERG errors depend on atmospheric conditions and terrain, working toward physics-informed uncertainty characterization and modeling for satellite-based precipitation products and their use in hydrologic applications and hazard assessment.
